Introducing Westmont Chiropractor Dr. Alvin Graun

Meet Westmont Chiropractor Dr. Graun.

I have often been asked why I decided to become a Chiropractic Physician.  Well, I must admit that there was a time when I was quite a skeptic.  After spending 4 ½ years in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman, 2nd Class during the Vietnam Era, my world revolved around medicine.  I wanted to be an MD.   I was attending Indiana University, tutoring nursing students and planning on attending Indiana School of Medicine.  I had never even considered anything else.

Each Sunday morning my family and I would pick up my great aunt and take her to church with us. She had been suffering with knee pain and mentioned that she was seeing a local chiropractor. At that time, I could not see how any human ailments could possibly be treated with anything other than surgery or drugs.  Yet she stated that she was feeling much better under this doctor’s care. Then when I heard that her chiropractor also made house calls I was intrigued.  After all no one makes house calls. I decided to go and talk with him.  We discussed chiropractic treatments for various conditions that I had treated while in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman with somewhat poor results. The longer we talked, the more I became interested in this new (to me) healthcare system.  It made perfect sense.  Chiropractic not only treats many health conditions, but more importantly, chiropractic treats the whole patient not just the condition.

While attending Indiana University I began looking into various chiropractic colleges to compare their curriculum to that of medical school and found both to be quite similar. Slowly I began to feel that I was being drawn in a new direction.  You see, I never decided to pursue a career in chiropractic...   ...chiropractic picked me.  I finished the semester at school and enrolled in the National College of Chiropractic in January of 1974 and have never regretted it.

I graduated from chiropractic college in 1978 on a Friday and began private practice on Monday as an associate with Dr. Charles W. Throne.  In 1980 I moved my practice to Woodridge where I happily continued to care for local families.  Then in 2002 when Dr. Throne suddenly died,  I returned to Westmont and assumed the care of his patients.   My career had come full circle.

They say that only 5% of the population actually enjoy their occupations.  I consider my self blessed that I am able to spend my time in the company of the finest people on the planet...   ...my patients.

My wife Sandy and I have two children, Jason age 27 and Kristine age 22.  We have been residents of Woodridge for 25 years. We both are from Hammond, Indiana.

I have attended hundreds of hours of post graduate education in orthopedics, pediatrics, nutrition, homeopathy and the diagnosis and treatment of internal disorders.  I have a Diplomate in Homeopathic Medicine from the National Board of Homeopathic Examiners and I am a board qualified Chiropractic Internist.

My staff and I practice Functional Diagnostic Medicine.  This deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of many of today’s chronic diseases.  We identify the under lying causes of your illness and then design an individual program for you to get well.  Our treatment plans involve safe and natural methods utilizing chiropractic care, homeopathy and naturopathic medicine.

Dr. Graun Asks some important questions of interest to Westmont residents - Chiropractor Westmont Dr. Graun Asks...

Will chiropractic adjustments make my spine too loose?
No. Only the spinal joints that are fixated and "locked up" receive attention. The occasional spinal joint that moves too much is passed over so weakened muscles and ligaments can strengthen and heal.
Is chiropractic safe?
What do you consider safe? Chiropractic care is safer than driving your car on the streets of Westmont, getting back surgery, taking aspirin and even safer than taking a shower in your own home! Compared with things we accept as safe, chiropractic care is even safer. Ready to get started? Call our office today.
