What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a safe, effective 200 year old system of natural medicine that is used by millions of people all over the world for acute and chronic health issues.  Rather than suppress or control symptoms like taking a cough suppressant for a cough, homeopathic medicines  (called “remedies”) assist the body’s internal healing process to heal itself. They accelerate healing, stimulate the immune system and ultimately strengthen the body, improving over all health. This is accomplished by following the principle of “like cures like”.  That means that if a substance can cause disease symptoms in a healthy person, then that same substance can cure a sick person suffering with similar symptoms. For instance, if you were suffering with hay fever symptoms such as a burning nasal discharge with tearing of your eyes, conventional medical treatment would be to give you an antihistamine to dry up your eyes and nose.  However, a homeopathic doctor might prescribe a remedy called Allium cepa (which is a diluted form of onion prepared by a homeopathic pharmacy) because it is known to cause a burning nasal discharge and watery eyes. In this way, the body’s self healing system is stimulated and a healing process begins not just suppression of symptoms.

What are Remedies?

Homeopathic remedies are derived from plants, animal substances and minerals. The original material is mixed in liquid and then repeatedly diluted and vigorously shaken with each dilution.  This frequent dilution method with vigorous shaking causes the remedy to act very strongly and the dilutions make them extremely safe. They are prepared in accordance with the FDA-approved guidelines as described in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States by a homeopathic pharmacy. They are non toxic and when properly administered can be safe to use with infants, children and adults. They are relatively inexpensive.

First Visit

Your first consultation with Dr Graun is very thorough.  Plan on spending one to two hours with him.  He will ask you to describe all of your ailments in detail.  He will want to know about your feelings regarding your ailments, any sensations that you might be experiencing or sensitivities that you may have.  He will want to know about your energy levels, your sleep habits, your appetite, digestion, elimination etc. He will want to know what surgeries you have had, what past illness you have experienced and what medications, vitamins or herbs you are now taking. He will also want to know about what fears or phobias that you have.  In the case of a child or infant, he will want to know about the pregnancy and mental state of the mother during the pregnancy. He tries to find the individual characteristics or unusual symptoms that make your ailments different from anyone else. This consultation helps him to form a picture of who you are and to understand exactly how your ailments are affecting you.  Homeopathic treatment is very individualized.

Dr. Graun will not prescribe a remedy immediately for you.  Rather, he will spend several days analyzing your condition.  Then he will choose a remedy that will address your current condition as well as your whole body, mentally, physically and emotionally.  A remedy may be used for a number of conditions if the symptoms generated by the remedy match your symptoms.

Once a remedy has been chosen, it can be mailed to you or you can come to the office to pick it up.  You will be instructed on how to take it and a follow up visit in 3 to 4 weeks will be scheduled. You will also be given a Follow-Up Visit Report form to take home and complete before your next visit.

Subsequent Visits

Plan on spending 20 to 60 minutes for these visits.  Dr. Graun will want to know how you reacted to the remedy.  He will want to know what improved, what did not improve and if any new symptoms developed that you never had before.    Depending on your reaction, the remedy may be repeated, increased or changed.  If your condition is progressing well, Dr. Graun will want to wait before changing a remedy.  It depends on each individual circumstance.  Another follow up visit will then be scheduled in 3 to 4 weeks.

Remember, homeopathic treatment takes time and patience.  A “quick fix” is not to be anticipated.

Which Diseases can be Treated with Homeopathy?

Homeopathy does not treat specific diseases or illness.  Rather, the whole person with the disease or sickness is treated.   Mental, emotional and physical ailments respond well to homeopathic treatment.

Palliative relief only can be expected with congenital, genetic, advanced degeneration and fixed metabolic diseases.

Dr. Graun Asks some important questions of interest to Westmont residents - Chiropractor Westmont Dr. Graun Asks...

Will chiropractic adjustments make my spine too loose?
No. Only the spinal joints that are fixated and "locked up" receive attention. The occasional spinal joint that moves too much is passed over so weakened muscles and ligaments can strengthen and heal.
Is chiropractic safe?
What do you consider safe? Chiropractic care is safer than driving your car on the streets of Westmont, getting back surgery, taking aspirin and even safer than taking a shower in your own home! Compared with things we accept as safe, chiropractic care is even safer. Ready to get started? Call our office today.
